Jeremy Thomas (1949 – 2026)

The BCTV is greatly saddened to announce the death of UK Film Producer, Jeremy Thomas (1949 – 2026).

Jeremy had been a member of the BCTV President’s Council since 2009 and is renowned for producing critically acclaimed and commercially successful films such as The Last Emperor (which won nine Oscars, including Best Picture), Sexy Beast, High-Rise, and Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence. He is also known for his collaborations with prominent directors like Bernardo Bertolucci, David Cronenberg, Nicolas Roeg, and Nagisa Oshima.

Jeremy will always be recognised as a major figure in British cinema, having served as chair of the British Film Institute and having received a BAFTA for outstanding British contribution to cinema. He will also be admired for supporting bold, unconventional projects and for his willingness to take creative risks.

Born in 1949, he came from a family with a strong film background – his father (Ralph of Doctor in the House films) and uncle (Gerald of ‘Carry On’ fame) were both successful directors. He began his career as an assistant editor before moving into film production in the 1970s. His latest film, Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, directed by Takashi Miike, is set to premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Monday 14 September 2026.

The BCTV sends its heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues in the industry at this sad time.
